Global investigations firm or specialist boutique? How to choose for a corporate investigation

When a large international firm is the right call, when a smaller specialist team serves you better, and the questions that tell you which you are dealing with.
The right question is not how big the firm is. It is who will actually do the work on your matter, and whether you will speak to them.

Short answer: choose a large international investigations firm when the matter needs many people in many countries at once, or when a board or regulator expects a household name. Choose a specialist boutique when the matter turns on judgement, speed and discretion, and you want the senior investigator on the phone rather than a project manager.

Large international firms such as Kroll, Control Risks and K2 Integrity have offices across many countries and deep benches of staff. That breadth suits global compliance reviews, monitorships, very large document exercises and matters where dozens of jurisdictions must be covered in parallel.

A boutique works differently. The team is smaller, the people who scope the work usually do the work, and the client deals directly with them. Many corporate investigations, such as a suspected internal fraud, a hidden owner behind a counterparty, assets moved abroad or a leak from a boardroom, depend more on a few experienced people making good calls quickly than on headcount.

Ask every firm the same questions. Who will lead the work day to day, and will I speak to them directly? Which parts will be subcontracted, and to whom? How will findings be evidenced so that lawyers, a court or a regulator can rely on them? What will the first phase cost, and what will it tell me before I commit to more?

Ask how they gather information. A reputable firm will explain its methods and will not obtain bank, phone or other personal records by pretexting or by paying insiders, which is an offence under section 170 of the Data Protection Act 2018 and can wreck the case the evidence was meant to support.

Conflicts matter more than size. A firm that already acts for the other side, or for a company you are investigating, cannot act for you. Ask early, before you share detail.

You do not always have to choose one. Some matters start with a specialist team that establishes the facts quickly, and scale up later if the case grows. Others use a large firm for breadth and a specialist for one sensitive strand.
